IMD II - ALL IR NO LECTURE
Use time in lab and 3rd to work on your Main Menu, post to your blog to show proof of work. We're going to do a final push next week and wrap main menu so get ready!
Here are some things to think about:
You will need to include your name in the menu, you are marketing your skills and abilities your audience should see your name in lights!
Navigation needs to be visible and obvious, make sure you have animated rollover states.
Every menu needs neutral state animation, including main menu.
This is also a good time to think about sound, both ambient and for buttons.
Get lots of work done today, and have a fun and safe weekend.

IMD I - 4 simple rules quiz!
Read all of your instructions for the quiz:
Part 1 - Duplicate the animation shown on screen.
Part 2 - lay out your notes that include: two flash notes handouts and your hand written notes on the 4 rules of FLASH animation.
When you've completed the two parts call me over and I'll grade them.
After you complete your quiz work on your notes page, it's due friday.
If your notes page is complete work on your bat or dot animation.
Finaly create a small blue dot on the corner of your quiz animation before I grade your work. The blue dot is worth an extra 5 points. Be sneaky - don't announce this to anyone. I'm checking to see if you've read this blog post. You'll loose the extra points if you announce it to the class!

IMD I 3RD Hour - NOTES THAT WORK!
IMD I 3RD Hour - NOTES THAT WORK!
Your Assignment 3rd hour is to create a notes page that could teach a student “new to flash” how to do the following:
1. Teach them simple rules for animation
2. How to create separate symbols from an object drawn on one layer
3. How to make a looping animation inside a movie clip (flying bat as an example)
4. How to make sure a looping element loops smo0000000othly (copy first frame to end of sequence)
Use Photoshop (8”x10” @ 300ppi) or PowerPoint for the assignment
The page must be illustrated with at least one screen cap. From flash (print screen btn and paste into photoshop)
Add humorous, and logical, elements to your page.
Are the steps broken down into a logical and understandable sequence? Seniors will test the “usability” of the document.

House on the Hill
Good morning!
We will be working with illustration in flash, as a warm-up draw the bat shown in the image below. Avoid using the pencil and brush tools on this one. Draw the body on one layer and the wings on another (a wise student would only draw one wing!) If the body and wings are on separate layers we can animate the bat and simulate flying.

IMD I - SRC 2 LABS LEFT!
Use lab time wisely! I will be collecting these assignments on FRIDAY.
You will have a portion of lab tomorrow to work.
The AUDIO HANDOUT is due at the beginning of lab TOMORROW!
I'm still a little concerned about uniforms staying together for the entire day, door to door. I feel that IMD sets a high standard for the building, lets make sure you look the part. Here's a message from Mrs. Moore about approaching cold weather:
A long sleeve T, uniform shirt, and IMD fleece will keep you toasty all winter long. :-)
Happy Aquarium Day!

Students, the cooler weather is here. To keep warm, you will need to wear your program's prescribed uniform pieces in classes, labs and the cafeteria. See your teacher for information on what clothing is acceptable for your program. Hoodies, jackets, sweaters and coats are not allowed. Your cooperation is appreciated.

Don’t Be A Hater, It’s Making You Sad
by Daniel Ravanshenas
Watch out, what you say about others may actually be like holding a mirror to yourself. A recent study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology examined “perceiver effects,” a tendency for people to view others as having the same personality and motives as they do. Your, your IQ, your gender, and your attitude may reveal more about your own personality then you think.
Three separate studies were conducted on college undergraduates to determine the extent that personal characteristics affect a person’s perception of other people.
Research participants with positive perceptions of others were more likely to be satisfied with their own life. They were less likely to be depressed. Plus, the study participants who liked people, had a greater sense of fitting in. Interestingly, the “positive perceivers” had a lower desire to have power over others, less fear of being in a position of power, and lower sense of misusing power or being socially dominant. When it comes to viewing themselves, the positive people typically described themselves as happy too.
On the flip side, those with negative perceptions of others were more likely more likely to judge others as more extraverted, less agreeable, and less emotionally stable. The researchers found “negative perceivers” were actually more likely to experience bouts of the “blues.”
It gets more interesting. Those with higher GPA, SAT scores and IQ scores view others as “less open to experience” and less conscientiousness. Brainiacs, however, did tend to rate other people as more agreeable. Additionally, the women in the study, more so than men, were more likely to rate others positively. Women also had a tendency to judge others as more extraverted, conscientious, and open to experience.
The findings aren’t conclusive or definitive, but they are intriguing. Yes, the “perceiver effects” study was small and not the best reflection of every day society. Nor does it fully support the idea that a person’s perception is only related to their personality or disposition.
Perceiver effects may in fact be self-perpetuated. Viewing others positively allows a person to become friendlier to others, and other people respond in kind. It’s also very likely that the opposite true: perceiving others negatively may initiate a vicious cycle for others to behave negatively, which in turn leads to a confirmation of a person’s original perception.
Think about that the next time you perceive others. Happy Perceiving!

SRC Project
Ok, now that we’ve learned some of the tools in 3D Studio Max lets put them to work with a creative project.
You’re going to design and model a Robot, Space Ship, or Castle (maybe all three!)
First you’ll need some reference information, images from other artists or from actual life. These images will help you add “real” details to your project. Collect images online and copy and paste into powerpoint (ech) print your reference images when your done.
With your reference images in hand start sketching, remember you only have access to the simple shapes so build complex shapes from simple ones. You’ll be amazed what you can create with them. Draw you idea a couple of times, remember were working in 3D and you should draw you creations from different angles (top, front, and side are smart choices) When the sketches are completed show them to me, and get started in 3DS.
You’ll have 4-5 hours in lab to complete the assignment.
Happy modeling!

Don’t let this happen to you:
You’ve just landed your first awesome interactive media job and your boss asks you to get a rj45 network cable. You walk into a room in the back of the studio and it looks like a radio shack exploded. There are 100’s of different cables. Which one is the rj45? You can remember, your cell can’t get a signal so Google is out of the question. You return to your boss and say, “Uhhh I’m not sure what a rj45 looks like.”
Find pictures of the following connectors (both plug and jack) and make a powerpoint slide for each type. Identify how these connectors are used (audio, video, data, etc). Some of the connectors will have multiple uses.
RCA
BNC

HDMI
VGA

IMD I - Get Ready for Uniform Checks
The staff and faculty at SWCA are proud of our awesome students and we want you to look professional while in the building. Here's an email from Mrs. Moore that was sent to staff:
Starting this week we will be doing random uniform checks. Student out of uniform will have to head to the office. Checks can take place in lab / hallway / cafeteria / and before and after school while in the building.
To clarify, uniform shirts (bowling shirt) must be worn every day, the fleece can be worn over the shirt.
Sorry if this sounds harsh, but the uniform policy helps keep our building looking professional.
Thanks!
Mr.F
Team,
please help to enforce the dress code. See page 26 of the student handbook.
Students must wear uniforms from time they enter until the time they leave the building. The exceptions are the students who are still awaiting uniforms. We are in the third week of school and hope to have all students in uniform by the end of week 4.
Thanking you for your leadership. Fall is in on the way!

IMD II - Robot Sherriff and the Design Process
Here’s a common scenario we find as designers. You have to develop a concept for a client, but you’re creative batteries are running low. Looking at other artists work is a great way to get ideas, but how do you make it your own? Where’s the line between “stealing” an idea and using someone else’s art to inspire something new?
Today we’re going to look at finding inspiration in a few graphics and combining their “ideas” to make something new.
For Today:
Explore one of your ires concepts by collecting a minimum of 30 resource images. Save them to a folder in your login.
Choose 2-3 of the images and make a series of sketches that combines the two ideas.

IMD I - About Me Slide Show
We have a long lab today (1.5 periods). We will spend lab working on a PowerPoint presentation that you will be sharing with the class early next week.
I'll start with a short demo on a few power point features and then you'll have time to work.
Here's the assignment:
Create a minimum of 5 slides
Include information about:
Hobbies and interests
Sports you like to watch or play
Favorite types of music
Your family
Your home school
Why did you join IMD?
Not into sports? Not a big music fan? Feel free to create your own categories.
Add images from online sources to make your presentation interesting.
I'd like for students to use all the time available on the presentation (about two lab periods) Try adding animation and sound if you finish your assignment early.
Make sure you save your work to the server. Save every 5 minutes!

Did you ever have one of those days? Script
Did you ever have one of those days?
When your guard was down a little bit
Maybe you’re tired
Your mind might be on something else (2 second Montage of people with stuff)
Bad things just happen
Maybe is a bunch of small things (montage breaking pencil, shoelace, catsup packet)
Little things can really ruin your day
But every once in a while
Its one bad thing
That can ruin a whole week
It comes out of nowhere
And everything flips 180 degrees
Its going to be a bad day
I’ll let you in on a secret. HALL PASS
It’s all about how you handle yourself under pressure WALKING TO FOUNTIAN
You might want to freak out
Spray, Look at slacks LOOK of SUPPRISE,
SCREAM MONTAGE
It’s only going to make things worse
Composure
It’s about maintaining control
Take a breath and think
Not of the consequences
LAUGHING AND MOCKING STUDENTS
Thinking about consequences leads to
SHORT SCREAM montage
You have to think of a solution quickly
STUDENT DUMPS A BUCKET OF WATER ON SELF RETURNS TO STUNNED CLASS
Your level of composure will be
directly related to the quality of solution.
STUDENT REMOVES JACKET TIES AROUND WAIST AND RETURNS TO CLASS

Student Portfolio Site Planning
1. Use godaddy.com to find your domain name
2. Find 4+ examples of portfolio sites for creative professionals (interactive, audio, web developer, video editor, etc.)
Create a blog post and paste the url of the site along with a screen cap of the site. Create one slide for each site you find (minimum of 4) One of the sites should be an example of what not to do (poorly designed site)
3. Find a definition of an artisits statement online and use it to write you own artists statement, you may need to reseach several styles before you find the one that fits you!

OSC Intern Position
Here's the message from OSC, take a look
I was hoping that South Western Career students might be interested in interning this year. Do you think it could be arranged again? They have been invaluable to the Center and our programs in the past.
Here is the info on this year's OSC Summer Programs. It is a great intern opportunity for those who have video/photography/web publishing experience. The interns would follow the both summer programs this year including: OSC Summer Institute and Young Women's Summer Institute attendees documenting the programs and reporting them on a daily basis with an online blog. Here is the info on the programs.
OSC Summer Institute - June 20 - July 2, 2010
http://www.osc.edu/education/si/
SI is a two-week residential program that gives gifted Ohio high school students entering their sophomore, junior or senior year project-based, hands-on learning. Working in small peer teams, the students use supercomputers for practical applications such as solving complex science and engineering problems, conducting network forensics to catch hackers, studying the spread of the bird flu and designing computer games.
OSC Young Women's Summer Institute - July 25 - July 31, 2010
Young Women’s Summer Institute (YWSI) is a week-long program sponsored by Ohio Supercomputer Center for middle-school girls in Ohio. It is designed to promote computer, math, science and engineering skills as well as provide hands-on experiences. YWSI helps girls develop an interest in these subjects by allowing them to work on a practical, interesting scientific problem using the latest computer technology.
Thanks again for all your help,
Ian
If you are up to the challenge please write a short letter stating your interest. Submit the letter to me by next TUESDAY the 13th.
This is an amazing opportunity and a great way to get real world experience at an amazing organization.

IMD II - Resume Menu Workday
Your resume menu is due Friday. Make sure you meet the following criteria:
1. NSA
2. Back Button with rollover state
3. 5 resume like buttons (with rollover state) that link to each resume component. If you are currently in skills you will need to talk with a classmate who had the class for the resume details.
4. an amazing illustrated background.
Use your time wisely. I'm concerned that allot of people are getting lax with this assignment.

IMD I - A letter from our client.
The conference call went well yesterday! I spoke with Anne later in the day and she said she was surprised and impressed by the professionalism of the class. Good job!
Here is an email she sent for the group:
Hello,
I am happy to be collaborating with your junior class on the development of the ChakraCat website. Now, all I need to do is get ChakraCat & A Basketful of Kittens made! I haven't gotten much further than that photo on the "How" page ;-)
Thank you, Travis, Lizzie, Katlin, Matt, Anthony and Chris, for your questions. I appreciate your inquisitive nature and hope to hear from all of you at some point. Please feel free to email me questions and I will respond as soon as I can. If I don't respond right away, please continue with your own intuition as your guide and continue the process of designing. My desire is also to allow 'your artistic web designer' to show up in the website as well! For you to be able to say, "I thought of that..." when
you show your work to others.
The intention of working with your class is to find one inspired designer with whom I can establish an ongoing 'real world' web designer partnership. For this particular junior class challenge, I will be offering a $50 VISA gift card for the person who represents ChakraCat to her fullest potential. Once this challenge is over, the artist who collaborates best with ChakraCat will then discuss with me their intention and ideas for creating joyful and educational websites.

For Today:
Continue working on formating the pages for web. Here are a couple of reminders:
1. resize the page to 800px wide
2. Use Preferences to setup ruler and grid
3. Create slices - making sure you snap to the grid
4. make sure you organize the content into source and root folders.
Have a great day, I'll see you tomorrow!

Chakra Cat is here!
This is concept art from the client. A .psd is on the way so don't wory about tearing apart the jpeg.
You will need to develop a plan for reformating the navigation and creating a flash graphic for the large cat graphic.
Plan your ideas on paper, don't push pixels yet. There are going to be alot of client constraints on your design.
